First season, first Championship. Just like real life F1. Wong and Kan absolutely dominated.

Good season but finishing out of the top 2 is a surprise.

4. Williams (3rd overall in HOF) Li & Jus. Ahvenus

5. Toyota (6th overall in HOF) DoCouto & Treiber

Great season and fantastic improvement over last years 11th place finish.

Lead all teams in GP wins but overall just couldn’t cut it.

10. Force India (10th overall in HOF) Durand & Vanha-Patokoski

Average year and for the second straight year this team has brought us the rookie of the year, this time being Mike Durand.

Drivers

21 – Tony Wu

One of our worst participants ever.

20 – Sakari Vanha-Patokoski

Fair performance in only 5 GP’s. Look forward to what he can accomplish in a full season in 2010.

19 – Silvio Taglieri

Former Champion, first season without Ferrari = Worst Season Ever. Terrible year.

18 – Mark Yeates

Disappointing result for such a strong competitor.

17 – Jimmy Le

Not very impressive. Can do better.

16 – Juuso Ahvenus

Expected more but not terrible.

15 – Fabio DoCouto

Not his best finish ever but still a fair season.

14 – Jussi Ahvenus

Our only 2 time Champion. Very big disappointment.

13 – Vesajoona Salonen

Fair season.

12 – Antero Matikka

This was the worst season ever for a Defending Champion. Expected much more.

11 – Paul Lucas

Solid competitor but disappointing not to be in the top 8.

10 – Visajaani Salonen

Best finish for Ferrari this year but overall very disappointing for Ferrari not to be much much higher.

9 – Mike Durand

Rookie of the Year 2009! Looking forward to an improvement next year!

8 – Jimmy Andreou

Jimmy finishes in the top 8 once again. His best finish was runner up in 2004.

7 – Paul Saunders

Was in the top 3 for the longest time before dropping off towards the end.

6 – Harry Lam

Very impressive season.

5 – James Li

Another fantastic season after 2nd overall last year.

4 – Paul Treiber

Shock of the Year! Amazing finish! This man was once banned from F1 do to poor participation. In his first year back he took no prisoners. Looking forward to a repeat performance in 2010!

3 – Al Ferreira

Fantastic finish. Such a solid performer.

2 – Vincent Kan

I predicted big things from Vincent and his team mate Alan. They had a great season last year joining halfway through. Amazing performance. How Ferrari decided to cut you will be the worst decision ever.

1 – Alan Wong

Congratulations to our new F1 Champion. Incredible consistency and drive to the championship. The first year a Canadian wins the Championship. He is our very own Jacques Villeneuve. Alan is the man to beat in 2010 and I’m sure it will be very difficult. Congrats Alan! Amazing year!

Alan, please submit your victory speech by January 1st, 2010.

Harry Lam has picked up his 3rd career win a week before his wedding! Congrats Harry! Lets see how you perform while married…haha

Mike Durand picks up his third 2nd place finish of the season. Can’t quit capture #1 in his rookie year but great performance nonetheless.

Renault has moved into 3rd all time in team career wins with 11. 3 behind leaders Ferrari and McLaren who are tied at 14 all time.

And most important…we have a new leader! Alan Wong has jumped to first place and Brawn GP is not only #1, #2 in the real F1 but also in ours.

This is not surprising. If you look at the 2008 Season End Review you will find the following:

“12th Overall – Alan Wong - Fantastic rookie performance. I expect big things come next season.”

“11th Overall – Vincent Kan - See 12.”

And to think, Ferrari boss Antero Matikka fired Vincent Kan midway through the season…unbelievable!

Belgium Update

News

Silvio Taglieri of Toro Rosso has won his 9th career GP collecting his first points of the season. Ferrari happened to win for the first time this season in the real life Belgium GP. Make no mistake about it; there is a spiritual connection here! ;)

This also marks the first time that Ferrari has not won the Belgium GP. In all previous seasons team Ferrari won…which is a great coincidence with the real life Belgium GP as Ferrari has won the most ever on that track as well. This time a former Ferrari driver won, driving for Toro Rosso.

Speaking of similarities not only is Brawn GP dominating in the real F1 world but they are also dominating in our fantasy league as Kan is the new leader with Wong close behind in 3rd. Sandwiched in the middle is Paul Saunders battling for the second straight year hoping it does not slip away again.

Please welcome Tony Wu replacement, Sakari Vanha-Patokoski, who raced for Force India along side Mike Durand. He had a strong first GP and should make the Rookie of the Year battle between him and his team mate a little more interesting.

In a shock move Antero Matikka (Ferrari) has traded away current Championship leader Vincent Kan for his cousin, Visajaani Salonen.

Vincent Kan moves to Brawn GP with his long time friend Alan Wong.

The reason for Antero’s decision: “Well, the Ferrari has had lately in 2 last GPs so big trouble... So I will change to my cousin Visajaani who has now purchased deal to see Formula 1 with a cable TV company...” – Antero, CEO Ferrari.

All other captains, Paul S., James, Mark and Silvio have decided to stick with their current teammates.

Malaysia Update

News

Malaysia Results are online, however overall standings have not been updated as of yet.

We will not be updating the Overall Standings until the appeal against the decision to approve controversial bodywork on three Formula One teams is decided upon on April 14th.

Half points were awarded for only the fifth time in Formula One history because only 32 of the scheduled 56 laps had been completed before a torrential downpour turned the track into a lake.

Sunday's rain-hit Malaysian Grand Prix was only the fifth race since the Formula One championship started in 1950 to end with half-points awarded.

The following details the other four:

SPAIN 1975

The race at Barcelona's Montjuich circuit was stopped after 29 of the 75 laps when German Rolf Stommelen's Lola crashed into the crowd and killed five spectators. Italian Lella Lombardi finished sixth, becoming the first woman driver to score. No woman has ever scored a full point.

AUSTRIA 1975

Stopped in the 29th of 54 laps at the Oesterreichring due to rain. The late Italian Vittorio Brambilla, nicknamed the "Monza Gorilla", took the only victory of his Formula One career. He was so excited that he spun into the barriers after taking the chequered flag.

MONACO 1984

Race halted in the 31st of 77 laps due to rain. French great Alain Prost was the winner. He ended up losing the title that year by a half-point to Austrian Niki Lauda, despite winning more races.

AUSTRALIA 1991

The season-ending race in Adelaide was won by Brazilian Ayrton Senna after being stopped on the 14th of 81 laps due to heavy rain. Italian Gianni Morbidelli ended the year with only a half-point and had to wait until 1994 to score a whole one.

F1 bodywork appeals to be heard in April

Robert Grant

March 28, 2009

Appeals against the decision to approve controversial bodywork on three Formula One teams competing in Sunday's Australian Grand Prix will be heard next month.

Ruling body the FIA said in a statement on Saturday it would hear arguments against the decision at a hearing in Paris on April 14.

It will come too late to prevent Toyota, Williams and Brawn running their contentious rear diffuser in both the Australian race and the Malaysian GP at Sepang on April 5.

And any decision may not leave enough time to modify cars for the Chinese GP in Shanghai on April 19.

But the final decision of the FIA's International Court of Appeal could mean the results of the two races are not known for several months if the issue drags on.

The FIA said it had received formal appeals from Red Bull, Renault and Ferrari against the decision of the stewards at Albert Park to reject protests lodged on Thursday.

The rival teams say that the design of the diffuser gives the three rebels an unfair aerodynamic advantage and could be worth up to five-tenths of a second a lap.

The issue was highlighted during the first practice session of the season on Friday when all but one of the seven quickest cars carried the radical body panels.

Mark Webber's Red Bull was fourth quickest and the only top-seven car with a conventionally-designed diffuser.

Williams topped the timesheets through Nico Rosberg while Brazilian veteran Rubens Barrichello was second in a Brawn and Jarno Trulli third in his Toyota.

Webber said later that he did not believe the true pace of all the cars would be shown until Sunday's race but added the diffuser argument needed to be settled.

Rule Change has been scraped by F1 for 2009.

Formula 1 has axed plans for a new scoring system in 2009, just nine days before the start of the season.

The sport's governing body, FIA, announced earlier this week that the driver with the most wins would be crowned world champion.

But following a protest from F1 teams, FIA says it will defer the introduction of the new system until 2010.

The traditional points system will be used when the 2009 season begins on 29 March with the Australian Grand Prix.

The teams wish to reaffirm their willingness to collaborate with the FIA in order to jointly define a new point system for the 2010 season

Fota statement

A FIA spokesman told BBC Sport: "The new scoring system has been deferred until 2010, but I'm sure this will be reviewed throughout the course of the season as any new rule changes have to have teams approval before we proceed.

"We're slightly surprised that the teams have taken this long to come forward as we were under the impression that they were happy with the rule changes."

FIA had argued that the new scoring system would make racing more exciting by encouraging drivers to chase wins.

But several drivers, among them defending champion Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, criticised the change.

That prompted Friday's statement from Formula One Teams' Association (Fota), which claimed the amendment was invalid because the proper protocol had not been observed.

"It is too late for FIA to impose a change for the 2009 season that has not obtained the unanimous agreement of all the competitors properly entered into the 2009 Formula 1 Championship," it read.

Fota had put forward its own scoring system, with the top three drivers earning 12, nine and seven, rather than 10, eight and six points respectively.

606: DEBATE

The ideal scenario for me would be to cancel this for this season, and then agree to next season implement FOTA's proposed points system changes of increasing the winners margin from 2nd place to 3

But that was unanimously rejected by the World Motorsport Council (WMSC).

Instead, the WMSC opted for a variant of an earlier idea proposed by F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, who had suggested an Olympic-style medals system, with the champion the driver with most golds.

The WMSC approved the "race-wins" plan, albeit with no provision to award medals.

Fota, which insists its own plan has widespread backing, hopes common ground can be reached with the FIA.

"The teams wish to reaffirm their willingness to collaborate with the FIA in order to jointly define a new point system for the 2010 season within a comprehensive set of measures aimed at further stimulating the attractiveness of the F1 sport," added the statement.

Hamilton would have finished second behind Ferrari's Felipe Massa had the new system applied last year.

The McLaren driver clinched the title after overtaking on the final bend of the final lap of the final race.

Update

The same rules that apply in real life will apply in our F1 Fantasy league.

Rule Change:

This year's Formula One title will go to the driver who wins the most races rather than the most points, the sport's governing body has said.

Winner takes it all; new rules for Formula 1

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) said the championship would go to drivers who won the most races over the duration of the season.

If two or more drivers finish the season with the same number of wins, the title will be awarded to the driver with the most points, the FIA said.

The allocation of points will remain the same as last year's 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 sequence.

The rest of the standings, from second to last place, will also be decided by the current points system with the constructors' championship unaffected.

The FIA ruled out awarding Olympic-style medals, as advocated by Formula One's commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone.

He had wanted the title to go to the driver with the most golds.

Sky News Sports Presenter Jon Desborough said: "It's just as well Lewis Hamilton MBE won last year because under these new rules he would have lost 6-5."

He added: "Let's hope no one driver dominates the first half of the season, otherwise the championship could be over by Silverstone."

Hamilton won last year despite winning fewer races than Ferrari's Felipe Massa.

An example of how our results would have been if this new rule existed when we started in 2004:

Rules                           New Rules

2004 - Silvio Taglieri       Silvio Taglieri

2005 - Jussi Ahvenus     Jussi Ahvenus

2006 - Paul Lucas          Mark Yeates (Finished 7th in points)

2007 - Jussi Ahvenus     Jussi Ahvenus

2008 - Antero Matikka    Vesajoona Salonen (Finished 9th in points)

P.S. I’d also like to state how disgusted I am with Antero Matikka for taking my seat on team Ferrari. This will be the first year I will be racing under a different team. Antero, revenge will be had!!!
